Thank you so much for answering my pre-BLW questions.  You are so helpful!  I think I am feeling a bit more confident in terms of food, but maybe a little less so when it comes to equipment.  While the BLW book provides some helpful tips, I would love to hear some lived experiences.  So...

1.  Where does your baby sit during meals?  High chair, booster chair at the table, your lap?  Did they start out one way and needed to change along the way?  Our daughter (who is not having solids yet) is usually with us during meals, sitting on one of our laps.  We have become real pros at eating while holding her.  We are very tempted to keep it this way as she fully joins in our meals, but is it practical?  Is anybody doing it?  Otherwise, what works best for you?  I don't really like the idea of the high chair, first of all because we love having her right at the table with us, and also because our appartment is cramped enough already.  I would consider a booster chair, but are there booster chairs that are comfortable for a 6 m/o?  I would love to see some pictures, and if you can point me to a source, even better (btw, I'm in Toronto).

2.  Did anybody use plates and utensils during the initial stage of BLW?  Any recommendations or concerns?  I know that she won't be feeding herself with a spoon for a while yet, but I think after my last post somebody suggested giving her a baby spoon to play with at mealtimes before she even starts solids, and I sort of like this suggestion.  Thoughts?

3.  Any practical suggestions re: bibs, placemats, clothing, minimizing mess, etc?

4 months/18 weeks too young?

Hi there :)  I'm Joy, a full time momma and I'm 24.  My little girl Vivian is just over 18 weeks old, and such a sweetie!  She is 100% breastfed :)  No trouble with allergies, and pretty darn healthy except for a few colds.  I'm also blessed in the fact that she usually sleeps through the night.  She measured last week at 25th percentile in height, 50th in weight.

My boyfriend love to cook and eat all sorts of different food...  We want to bring up Vivian so she can enjoy food with us, and I discovered BLW... I love the idea!  I bought the book and read it, and found it quite helpful :)  But...  There's something I want to know.

Vivian can sit up with support, has been grabbing for any food she can, fairly good at bringing toys to her mouth and even acts like she's chewing when she watches us eat.  I was a little nervous, because I know that you aren't supposed to start BLW till they are 6 months, she is about 4 1/2 months.  Today I decided to try to give her a few little bites of healthy food to see what she would do, and if she would swallow them or push them back out.  They were teeny tiny and soft so I knew she wouldn't choke, but not purred.  For lunch she tried little bits of baked sweet potato and chicken... and loved it!  No adverse effects, and if anything she's seemed happier today, as she's been cranky and I was blaming it on teething.  I saw what she ate passed into her diaper, but her poos seem pretty much normal.  Tonight she had some bits of white potato, peas, and red bell peppers, all well cooked.  She LOVED it so much.  She actually chews her food for the most part, and most doesn't get spit out.

But...  Doing a little research, I'm starting to feel bad... Am I starting too early?  I don't want to risk her getting sick or anything.  Am I going to mess her up on doing traditional BLW by hand feeding her bits of food right now?  Should I wait till she's 6 months then restart?  Or should I just go ahead and jump her up to normal BLW?  We eat all our meals together, and she just looks so pleading lol!!  But if it's what's best for her, we can wait.

I had mentioned starting her on real foods to her, and she suggested infant cereal... Which I'm not big on the idea.  I had kinda brought up the topic of BLW, and she looked at me like I had lost my mind :/  Luckily, she is super supportive of breastfeeding.

Has anybody experienced any resistance from their pediatrician regarding BLW?  If so, what arguments did you use to defend your choice?

It has not happened to us yet, as the issue of solids has not come to the surface yet, but I think it may soon.  DD is almost 4 months, and we are having the 4 month appointment this Monday.  At the 3 month appointment the dr mentioned casually that she may be starting on solids soon.  She also mentioned that she recommends starting solids as soon as the baby starts showing interest, and she strongly recommends cereal, as it is supplemented with iron, and according to her most babies will become deficient before their first birthday.  All this was pretty much said in passing, but she also made it clear that she expects that DD *may* be eating cereal by her next visit.  So I am expecting this topic to come up again on Monday, and I plan to tell her that we will be doing BLW, waiting to introduce solids at least until 6 months, unless she shows strong interest and is developmentally ready at some point between 5 and 6 months, and we would prefer to skip cereal altogether.  In case I meet with opposition, can you provide me with some strong arguments that may convince a dr?  She seems quite accepting on a whole, and is very much pro-breastfeeding, but I want to be prepared, just in case.

Also, any suggestions on preventing the iron deficiency that is apparently so common?  I was thinking that my diet and prenatal vitamin should take care of this via breastfeeding, plus we will be introducing dark green veggies and meat among her first foods, hopefully soon after she turns 6 months.  Is there anything I'm missing?  My only concern is that while she will be having healthy, iron-rich solids, she may have very little of them at first, and most of her nutrition will be coming from breastmilk during this first year - is that enough, provided I'm not iron deficient?

Sources of BLW-friendly recipes?

I was happy to see an earlier post -and replies- about BLW recipes.  I will be tracking it and searching the community for similar posts.  Apart from that, could you suggest a good source of BLW-friendly recipes?  I'm not much of a cook, but I hope to improve during my year-long mat leave, and an additional challenge is the fact that my husband is a gourmet cook.  I'm not trying to compete with him, but I would like to develop a good repertire of my own.  Any suggestions of appropriate books, websites, etc?  I know that the BLW book has a cook book sequel.  Has anybody used it?  Is it any good?
My baby is 14 months with eight front teeth and seems to handle his food fine. Any concern with offering blueberries whole?

Age question

How old were your babies when they started eating regular, full meals and started actually weaning? My LO is 9 mo, we've been doing baby led solids since 6 mo, and she is gradually eating more of the food I give her, but is not what I would call regular yet, and is not weaning. (I'm not in a rush to wean her, she's only 9 mo, but I'm just curious what other people's kids have done)

Cinnamon and tomatoes?

This is an odd question, and if you know a community that might be better able to take a guess, please let me know.

My daughter (16 months old) loves tomatoes. She ate one early on in her solid food adventure, and her chin got a little red, so we backed off and tried again a few months later. She's been fine with them since then and eats tomatoes frequently without a problem. About a month ago, we all shared a cinnamon maple waffle at a coffee shop at around 11 in the morning. We ate lunch around 1, which included tomato, and she nursed down for a nap immediately after. While nursing her, I noticed her face getting red and blotchy. By the time she woke up, it looked awful: red with white puffy places all over her face. It didn't seem to bother her at all, and she didn't have any trouble breathing or any poop issues or any other allergy symptoms; it seemed entirely topical. Since she had ended up with tomato all over her face, and it was so soon after she ate that, the tomato seemed a likely culprit, but she hadn't had a reaction like that before or since. We figured it was the cinnamon, since that was the only thing that she hadn't really had before. We've kept her away from cinnamon since then, and we watched her with tomatoes closely for a while after that, but she didn't have a reaction like that again.

This morning, we had oatmeal. Hers was plain, but mine had cinnamon in it. She didn't eat any of mine, but her spoon did come into contact with my bowl, so she could have gotten a tiny bit of cinnamon despite my attempts to avoid it. No reaction until 10 hours later, when she was eating tomatoes at dinner. She didn't have nearly the reaction she had that other time, but while she was eating, her chin and her cheeks got really red. I took the tomatoes away before she ate too many or got the juice on too much of her face.

tl;dr Is it possible that it's the combination of cinnamon and tomatoes that cause a topical reaction in her? Could the cinnamon somehow be weakening some protection that she normally has against the tomatoes? Is it worth it to try some cinnamon without tomatoes following to test the theory?

Kiwi

Is there any reason I shouldn't give my 8 month old kiwi? I thought I remembered reading somewhere it was a high allergen, like strawberries, but I'm unsure. I have no food allergies, but her father is allergic to tomatoes (just that, nothing else). I keep almost giving it to her then rethinking it at the last second. Thoughts?

Cut green beans

I had some cut green beans in the freezer, which I warmed up and offered to my 6m3w daughter because I didn't think what I was eating was very good for her. I knew the green beans were cut too short. Maybe 1 1/2 inches? But I didn't really think she'd get them in her mouth.

Anyway, the first couple times I offered them to her (by placing them on her high chair tray), she played with them but didn't eat them. But today she jammed one in her mouth. She moved it around in her mouth. Eventually it got to the back of her tongue and she gagged fairly hard. She eventually swallowed it.

She's fine, but I'm wondering how to proceed on the green beans now that she's proven she will stick them all the way into her mouth. Obviously whole beans would be a better choice, but I just had these ones already and I hate green beans so they were going to sit in my freezer for a few more months and eventually probably get thrown away. Would it be safer if I did something to the green beans like butterfly them or cut them into smaller pieces? Or would that only be worse?

(On a side note, I picked up some purees since I had some WIC checks, and I was kind of shocked at how thin they were. I was thinking the baby would be able to spoon feed them to herself like pea soup, but I ended up pouring the chicken slop onto toast fingers. The toast fingers were a lot easier for her to handle, although I wasn't quite keen on giving her wheat-based multigrain bread yet; again, it's what I had.)
My son Finn (17 months) is sick and has a severe sore throat. Any food suggestions until he gets better? Right now he's eating yogurt (which I'd like to limit because dairy encourages congestion) and sometimes scrambled egg. He's even turning his head to blueberries & grapes, which are his favorites.

I'm glad I'm still nursing.

Celery skin reaction

As an update to my previous post (http://babyledweaners.livejournal.com/173370.html), we've dialed back the spoonfeeding and our daughter is also getting better at reaching/grabbing/sticking things in her mouth.

Last night I gave her a stalk of celery. She'd had celery cooked and uncooked already, but she had a skin reaction last night. Her hands swelled and she has spots on her body and face where she jabbed herself with the celery. She had a well visit today, and the pediatrician talked to us about how to treat it (mostly just watch it), but I stupidly forgot to ask questions about going forward.

I know celery allergies are more common in Europe than in the US, so I wonder if anyone has experience? I'm not going to buy any more celery anytime soon, but should I be particularly vigilant about eliminating it? I know that it is a common seasoning in prepared foods. Would you worry about accidental exposure? As a breastfeeding mom, would you eliminate it from your diet? Would you reintroduce it as a solid food later to see if she still reacts? I know I can call the doctor to ask these questions, but while the doctor trusted my observation that it was probably the celery, she didn't seem familiar with celery allergies specifically.

Milk & Dairy

What do you know about milk?  I'm feeling uncertain about introducing my 10 month old to dairy.  Which is silly because I live in Wisconsin.  We live for dairy.  Give us cheese and in many varieties.  Got Goat?  Got Cow?  Woo Hoo!  I think I'm worried because he gets breastmilk in the morning and night but formula during the day at daycare.  I want to make sure he gets all his vitamins and minerals and maybe I'm under a delusion that he's getting it from formula.

Have you introduced milk or dairy?  What did you feed your baby?  How old what your baby?

Spoonfeeding, hand-mouth coordination?

So I was trying to mostly put off solids until my daughter actually turned six months (tomorrow), but I kind of failed at that. She loves them!

Here's the thing. She wants me to feed them to her. She sits unassisted great. (Like, there have been times when grocery shopping that I never noticed her seat buckle came undone, but she wasn't falling over when I made turns or anything.) But she does still have the tongue-thrust reflex. The reason I introduced food with a spoon was because it was split-pea soup (what I was having for dinner). I put some in a spoon and held it up close to her mouth, and she leaned in and sucked it down. She did grab the spoon and try to feed herself, but she hasn't repeated that action (although it's only been a few days).

When I sit down to eat solids myself and put her in her high chair, I am pretty sure she is whining because she wants solids too. I offered her a slice of well-cooked butternut squash. She did smash it with her hand, but didn't seem to think about moving it to her mouth and whined until I loaded a spoon for her. She can grab the spoon, but really seemed to prefer I hold it for her most of the time. Later we tried a banana, and I ended up holding the banana while she nommed on it.

I'm really watching her and following her cues, but she's not really self-feeding, although she is self-regulating. I'm not super concerned about the spoon-feeding since I'm only offering and not pushing. But I'm a little concerned that I may be delaying her ability to grab foods herself? Or that she's a little behind developmentally on hand-mouth coordination? The only thing other than a spoon that she's ever really moved to her mouth is my hand, which she seems to do when she wants to suck. She likes to suck on toys and stuff, but she only ever leans up to them; she doesn't use her hands to put them in her mouth. (Edit: I take this back. She does hold her sippy cup and suck on it--not drinking from the spout, just sucking on the top of the lid.)

BLWers, should I be trying harder to make my baby feed herself if she wants to eat solids? Will this sort itself out in time as long as I am only offering and following her cues?
